Deodorant vs Antiperspirant – Sustainable Living

Your guide to transitioning to natural deodorants and a selection of Irish Natural Deodorants to try today.

Your skin, liver, kidneys, lungs and gut make up the bodies in-built detoxification system. Sweating is a natural process by which your body regulates temperature and it also acts to eliminate toxins such as heavy metals and chemicals from the body. However, when sweat comes into contact with bacteria on the skin’s surface it can result in body odour.

  • Deodorant protects against odour.
  • Antiperspirant reduces the amount of sweat produced by temporarily blocking the pores that release sweat and also often acting as a deodorant.

The more I looked into regular antiperspirants I realised the pore blocking element of antiperspirant really didn’t appeal to me. I also wanted to make sure the ingredients in any deodorant I used were clean and natural, after all, the skin is our largest organ and I want to protect it.

The natural deodorants at Green Outlook are made with non harmful ingredients. These natural deodorants prevent unpleasant odours by preventing bacteria from smelling. Plus, they have an added antiperspirant effect due to their ingredients of bicarbonate soda/arrow root powder that still allows your body to get rid of waste through its natural function.

They are made up of natural oils, powders and butters right here in Ireland. Even better, they do not contain aluminium, artificial fragrances, parabens, and alcohol.

For optimal results:

  • Apply natural deodorant to clean, dry skin.
  • Wear natural breathable materials like cotton – synthetic materials (which are made of plastics), trap sweat and bacteria resulting in odour.

Transitioning from chemical based antiperspirants
When switching to natural deodorants there may be a two week adaptation period, where you may notice odour, during which your skin and pores are beginning to self regulate having been disrupted for some time. Stick with your natural deodorant solely during this time for best results. If you have sensitive skin or if irritation occurs look at the baking soda free options available at Green Outlook.
